1958: Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, the Salt Lakes and the Story of Diamond Electrical Industries

Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy and the 1958 Salt Lake story of Diamond Electrical Industries, Kolkata

Ask anyone who grew up in Salt Lake how the township began and one name comes up before any other. In 1958, Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, the first Chief Minister of West Bengal, visited the salt water marshes east of the city for the first time and saw land where others saw water. The same year marks the start of Diamond Electrical Industries.

This post sets out what actually happened between 1958 and 1973, why the Diamond story follows the same idea, and what a planned city can teach you about the light in your own home.

What Happened in 1958 at the Salt Lakes?

In 1958, Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy made his first visit to the salt water lakes on the eastern edge of Kolkata. That visit turned an earlier engineering survey into a political decision: reclaim the marsh and build a satellite township to ease the pressure on an overcrowded city.

The pressure was real. After Partition, West Bengal received a large number of refugees from East Pakistan, and many settled in and around Kolkata. A Dutch engineering firm, NEDECO, had already surveyed the salt water lakes in 1953. The survey said the land could be made. Dr Roy decided it should be.

He trained and practised as a physician before he entered politics, and the Salt Lake idea reads like a doctor's prescription. The patient was a crowded Calcutta. The diagnosis was too many people on too little land. The treatment was a new town on the marshes.

From Marsh to Bidhannagar: The History of Salt Lake Kolkata in Five Dates

From marsh to Bidhannagar: the history of Salt Lake Kolkata in five dates, 1953 to 1973

Here is the history of Salt Lake Kolkata in the dates that matter.

Year What happened
1953 Dutch firm NEDECO surveys the salt water lakes
1958 Dr Roy visits the area for the first time
1959 A global tender is floated and won by Invest-Import of Yugoslavia
16 April 1962 Dr Roy switches on the pipeline carrying Hooghly silt to the lakes
1973 A Calcutta Gazette notification renames Salt Lake City as Bidhannagar

Dredgers lifted silt from the bed of the Hooghly, and pipes laid from the Chitpur lock gate carried it east through a chain of pumping stations. Layer by layer, the marsh became ground.

Dr Roy did not live to see the houses. He died on 1 July 1962, his 80th birthday, less than three months after switching on that pipeline. India now marks 1 July as National Doctors' Day in his memory.

The town itself was drawn by Dobrivoje Tošković, a Yugoslav architect, as a garden city for about 2,00,000 residents. Around 23 percent of the land went to roads, against roughly 7 percent in old Kolkata.

Why Does Diamond Electrical Industries Care About 1958?

Because the Salt Lake story and the name Diamond rest on the same idea: some of the best things are made, not found.

A natural diamond forms when carbon sits under great heat and pressure for a very long time. Salt Lake formed in a similar way. River silt was pushed through kilometres of pipe and pressed down, season after season, until a marsh could carry roads, parks and homes. Neither arrived ready. Both were made by patience and pressure.

That is the thinking behind Diamond lights in Kolkata. A light fitting is a small thing, but a home that feels right in the evening is made the way Bidhannagar was made: with a plan, the right material in the right place, and time to do it properly. Diamond LED lights are chosen the same way, starting from the room, not from the catalogue.

What Can a 1958 City Plan Teach Your Home Lighting Today?

Plan before you build. Tošković fixed roads, parks and blocks on paper before a single house went up. Lighting works the same way: decide where light is needed, what kind of light it should be, and where the wiring runs before the false ceiling is closed.

Here are three planning lessons from 1958, each showing where Diamond LED lights fit in a real Kolkata home.

  • Roads before houses means wiring before ceilings. A family renovating a 1980s house in CA Block found the electrician ready to fix points wherever the old bulbs had been. Marking every COB downlight for the false ceiling on the drawing first saved them from cutting the new ceiling twice.
  • Sectors have purposes, and so do corners of a room. Sector V is for work, the residential blocks are for living. In a 10 x 12 ft bedroom in a Sector II flat, give the ceiling a soft glow from LED profile lights in the cove, and keep a separate, focused light beside the bed for reading.
  • Leave room to breathe. Salt Lake set aside generous road space so the town would not feel crowded. A ceiling with twelve downlights in a small drawing room feels like a traffic jam. Fewer Diamond LED lights, placed well, with a pair of wall lights along the passage, usually look calmer and cost less to run.

Whichever Diamond lights in Kolkata you shortlist, settle the plan first and the fittings second.

In 1962, Hooghly silt travelled through pipes to build Salt Lake. Since August 2025, the full Green Line of the Kolkata Metro runs from Salt Lake Sector V to Howrah Maidan, passing beneath the same river, with a stop at Esplanade.

So a Salt Lake resident can reach the Diamond showroom in Esplanade without changing trains: 11A, Esplanade East, above K.C. Das, Kolkata 700069. Bring your floor plan, a few photos of the rooms and your ceiling height, and see Diamond LED lights switched on before you decide.

At Diamond Electrical Industries, our team will help you plan the light before the ceiling goes up, the way Dr Roy's town was planned before the first house.

Frequently Asked Questions

When did Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy first visit Salt Lake?

Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy first visited the salt water lakes east of Kolkata in 1958. The visit led to a global tender in 1959, and on 16 April 1962 he switched on the pipeline that began filling the lakes with silt from the Hooghly.

Is it Bidhan Chandra Roy or Bidhan Chandra Ray?

Both spellings refer to the same person. Roy is the spelling used in most official records, while Ray is a common variant. He was the first Chief Minister of West Bengal.

Why is Salt Lake called Bidhannagar?

Salt Lake is called Bidhannagar in honour of Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, who started the reclamation project. A Calcutta Gazette notification of 1973 made the new name official, though most people in Kolkata still say Salt Lake.

What is the link between Diamond Electrical Industries and 1958?

The brand traces its legacy back to 1958, the same year Dr Roy first visited the salt lakes. Both stories share one idea: good things are made with a plan, patience and pressure, much like a diamond. Today that thinking guides how Diamond lights in Kolkata homes are chosen.

Where is the Diamond showroom in Esplanade?

The Diamond showroom in Esplanade is at 11A, Esplanade East, above K.C. Das, Kolkata 700069. From Salt Lake, take the Green Line of the Kolkata Metro to Esplanade. You can also shop Diamond lights in Kolkata online at dewdiamond.com.
