Profile Light Design for Ceiling and Walls: Types, Sizes and Where Each One Works

Profile light design for ceiling and walls in a living room by Diamond Electrical Industries

Your carpenter wants to know where the light line will run. Your electrician wants the total metres. The shop asks whether you need 17 mm or 25 mm, and the site work starts on Monday. A good profile light design comes down to four decisions: how it mounts, how wide it is, what shape it follows and what colour of white it gives. This guide covers each one, shows which size suits which job, and helps you work out your length before you browse our LED profile lights.

What is a profile light?

A profile light is an LED strip housed inside an aluminium or silicone channel and covered by an opal diffuser. The channel holds the strip in a clean line. The diffuser softens the individual LED dots, so you see one smooth band of light instead of a row of points.

Think of the diffuser as a muslin curtain on a sunny window. The sun is the same, but the glare is gone and the room feels softer. An aluminium profile light adds a second benefit: the metal body draws heat away from the strip, which helps the strip last longer.

A complete setup has three parts: the profile, the LED strip light and the driver that powers it. Our 12V strips run from 60 to 240 LEDs per metre and are sold without a driver, so plan all three together.

Which type of profile light suits your space?

Choose the type by the surface and the shape of the run. Recessed profiles sit flush inside gypsum or joinery, surface profiles fix onto an existing ceiling or wall, corner profiles fit a junction at an angle, and silicone profiles bend where aluminium cannot.

Profile type Sizes in our range Mounting Best for
Aluminium Recessed Profile 8, 10, 12, 17, 25, 35, 50, 75 mm Flush inside the surface Gypsum ceilings, walls, wardrobes, steps

Recessed, surface, corner and silicone profile light types with a ceiling and kitchen profile light design by Diamond Electrical Industries

Recessed: the light belongs to the building

A recessed aluminium profile light needs a cut or routed slot, so plan it before the gypsum or joinery is finished. The result works like a handle set flush into a sliding wardrobe: nothing projects, and the line reads as part of the architecture.

Surface: the practical choice for a finished home

A surface profile light fixes straight onto the ceiling or wall, so it suits a flat that is already painted and occupied. The silver finish pairs well with steel, concrete and wood.

Corner: the line that lights two surfaces

A corner profile light fits a 90 degree corner with an angled face, which throws light across the junction instead of straight down. In a Bengaluru kitchen, a 17 mm corner run under the top cabinets can light the whole counter without touching the ceiling.

Silicone: when the wall is not straight

Rigid aluminium cannot follow an arch. Our flexible silicone channels bend around curves without cracking, and they are water-resistant and UV-stable. An arched pooja niche or a curved cove behind a sofa is the natural place for them.

How to choose the right profile size

Treat width like a pen nib. A fine liner suits a detailed sketch, while a broad marker is what you reach for on a wall chart. A narrow profile draws a discreet detail. A wide one makes the line a feature you notice from across the room.

The job A sensible starting width
Wardrobes, shelves and glass display 8 to 17 mm
Under-cabinet kitchen light 17 mm corner profile light
Bedroom and living room profile light ceiling lines 17 to 35 mm
Feature walls and large hall ceilings 35 to 50 mm
Lobbies, showrooms and commercial projects 50 to 75 mm

Before you order, check that your strip fits the channel. Our silicone listings state the internal channel, from 6 mm on the SPSF1010 to 11 mm on the SPSF1616, so match the strip width to that number.

Profile light ceiling ideas that work in Indian homes

The most reliable profile light ceiling is also the simplest: one or two long lines that follow the room. In a living room, a line along the length of the sofa wall gives soft general light and keeps the fan clear of it. A ceiling profile light rectangle around the room needs more metres, but it lifts a low ceiling because the eye follows the glow outward.

Planning a gypsum profile light ceiling? Read our false ceiling lights guide first, since the profile lines and downlights must share one layout. A sound profile light design leaves room for both, with the lines giving soft fill and the downlights giving focused light where you read or dine.

Avoid running a profile directly above a shiny marble floor or a glossy TV wall without testing it first. A bright line can reflect clearly in polished surfaces.

Profile light design without false ceiling: does it work?

Yes. Use a surface profile fixed with screws or clips onto the concrete or plastered ceiling, then route the wiring along the wall or through a slim casing. You get a clean line of light without the cost, dust or lost height of gypsum work.

The real question with a profile light without false ceiling is where the wires and driver go. The driver needs a spot that stays reachable and is not sealed in. A top shelf, a loft or the back of a wardrobe often solves this. Ask your electrician to mark the feed point before anything is fixed.

Low-ceiling flats in Mumbai and Delhi gain the most, because a surface profile light takes almost no height. A 15 x 10 mm silicone or 17 mm aluminium size stays slim on a white ceiling.

Profile light bedroom design: where should the line go?

Keep the light out of your eyes when you lie down. The best lines run behind the headboard, along the wall above the wardrobe, or around the edge of the ceiling, where the glow bounces back softly.

For a profile light in a bedroom, warm white around 2700K is the usual choice for evenings. Natural white around 4000K suits a study corner or a dressing area, where you need to see colours properly.

A wardrobe interior is the small upgrade most people forget. A 12 mm recessed profile or a 17 mm corner profile light shows the clothes instead of your back. For more ways to layer a room, browse our room decoration lights ideas.

Walls, stairs and kitchens

On walls, a recessed aluminium profile light behind a panel lets the texture show. Stairs suit corner profile lights under the treads, which light each step without pointing at your eyes. In kitchens, a corner profile light under the wall cabinets puts the light on the counter, where a ceiling light only throws your shadow on the chopping board.

How much profile do you need?

Measure the run in feet, multiply by 0.3048 and round up to allow for joins and turns. A full perimeter on a 10 x 12 ft bedroom is 44 ft, or about 13.4 metres. A single headboard line in the same room may be only 2 metres, which changes the budget completely.

Next, size the driver. Treat it like a phone charger: too small and it struggles, so it needs spare capacity. Multiply the strip watts per metre by the total metres, then add about 20 percent. As an example, a strip drawing 10 W per metre over 8 metres needs 80 W, so choose a driver of 100 W. Long runs can dim towards the far end, so share your layout with us before you order.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a profile light, a strip light and a cove light?

A strip light is the flexible LED tape itself. A profile light is that strip fitted inside an aluminium or silicone channel with a diffuser, which gives a neater line. A cove light is a method, not a product: the light is hidden in a ceiling recess so it bounces softly off the surface. You can build a cove with a corner profile light.

Can profile lights be installed on a concrete ceiling?

Yes. A surface profile light can be fixed directly onto a concrete or plastered ceiling with screws or clips, with no gypsum work needed. An aluminium profile light gives a straight, rigid line for this. Plan the wire route and the driver position before fixing it.

Which profile light is best for a bedroom ceiling?

A 17 to 25 mm profile in warm white around 2700K suits most bedrooms. Run it along the ceiling edge or behind the headboard so it never sits directly above your eyes. In a finished room, use a surface profile light. If gypsum work is still under way, use a recessed one.

Can profile lights be used in bathrooms or outdoors?

Our silicone profiles are water-resistant and listed for bathroom niches and covered outdoor areas. For these spaces, choose silicone over an aluminium profile light, and check that the strip and driver also suit the location. Keep the driver in a dry place.
